This hand colored glass slide is an ORIGINAL and it is NOT a reproduction. It was created to be projected onto the movie theatre screen before the film was released to promote the "coming attraction". Some people in the movie collectible world have said, that, glass slides are much rarer than the paper poster memorabilia from the same film and are very rare pieces of film history.

Plot Summary:
Caught, the 1949 Max Ophuls romantic love triangle melodrama ("The Story of a Desperate Woman!"; "The Story of a Desperate Girl."; "A new MGM hit!"; "From the novel 'Wild Calendar' by Libbie Black"; a loose fictionalized version of Howard Hughes' life at the time; a wealthy but crazy man marries a beautiful model and then becomes obsessed with her, keeping her away from the rest of the world; she manages to take a job with a doctor, and she falls in love with him, but her husband gets her back for a while) starring James Mason ("In his first American motion picture"), Barbara Bel Geddes, Robert Ryan, Curt Bois, Art Smith, Natalie Schafer, and Frank Ferguson. Note that Mason was originally slated for the villain's role, but he had been a bad guy in so many of his British films, he successfully lobbied to be the protagonist in his first U.S. film.
Trivia
:
The 1992 restoration of the film, done at UCLA Film and Television Archives, was financed by Martin Scorsese, who would direct a biopic of Howard Hughes - upon whose life the film is loosely based - The Aviator (2004) a decade later.
For his American film debut, Mason was initially cast in the hard-hearted role enacted by Robert Ryan. Mason wanted to change the villainous image he'd established in British films and and asked play the other male role.
The character Smith Ohlrig is based on Howard Hughes.
After reading the enthusiastic preview cards for "Caught," Mason said, "The release date was three months ahead. For everyone concerned...these were three months of euphoria...things returned to normal when the film opened in New York. No one came to see it."

James Mason was born in Yorkshire, England in 1909. He intended to become an architect, but while studying at Cambridge he did some theater, and after graduation he joined the Old Vic theatre. He performed on the stage, and was in many minor English movies in 1936 to 1939 (there was a law requiring a percentage of movies shown in English to be made there, so many "quota quickies" were filmed). He was a conscientious objector in WWII. During the early 1940s, he continued to make many movies, and the quality of his parts steadily increased. It was his performance in The Seventh Veil, as a handicapped musician involved in a bizarre romantic love triangle that made him a major star, and in 1947 he starred in Carol Reed's Odd Man Out, as an IRA member on the run from the law, and that made him an international star. He went to Hollywood, where he co-starred in Caught, as a doctor in another bizarre romantic love triangle. Despite his being 40, he was able to continue to play romantic leads, both because he had aged well and because of his beautiful speaking voice, and he starred in movies like Pandora and the Flying Dutchman and A Star Is Born (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), but he also took memorable supporting roles, including as Captain Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. In the late 1950s, it appeared his career might be winding down, and he began doing TV as well as supporting roles in movies. But in 1959 he was a most memorable villain in Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, and that same year he starred as Professor Lindenbrook in Journey to the Center of the Earth! In 1962 he had one of the very best roles of his career, starring as Humbert Humbert in Stanley Kubrick's Lolita. He also was memorable in 1966 as the aging lothario pursuing "plain" young Lynn Redgrave in Georgy Girl (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film). He continued acting through the 1970s and mid 1980s, playing Mr. Jordan in Heaven Can Wait and Dr. Watson in Murder by Decree. He was a delightful slimy lawyer in The Verdict (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film) in 1982. He passed away from a heart attack in 1984 at the age of 75. James Mason was a superlative character actor who played many quirky leading roles over his long illustrious career. He took almost every role that was offered to him (he appeared in 150 movies!), and while they were not all "winners", I highly recommend all of the movies mentioned above!

Barbara Bel Geddes was an actress from the 1940s to the 1990s. She starred in "The Long Night" on Broadway, and at the age of 24, she was signed to recreate that role by RKO, who called her "The Number One Film Find of the Year". Some of her movies include: Vertigo, By Love Possessed, 5 Branded Women, and I Remember Mama (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role as Katrin in this film). She was also "Miss Ellie" on TV's "Dallas". She passed away in 2005 at the age of 82.

James F. Hawkins (born November 14, 1941) is an American former actor, producer and writer. He is probably best-known for his TV roles in shows like Annie Oakley, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Leave It To Beaver and The Donna Reed Show; and as well as Tommy Bailey, the youngest son of James Stewart and Donna Reed, in the 1946 film It's a Wonderful Life.
Although it's been thought that Hawkins retired from acting in his late twenties, his actual last appearance was in his thirties on the 1974-75 TV series, Kolchak: The Night Stalker. He is the author of five books about the film It's A Wonderful Life, served on The Jimmy Stewart Museum Advisory Board and for 20 years served on the Board of Directors of the Donna Reed Foundation for the Performing Arts. In celebration of the Frank Capra film, Hawkins and other cast members appear annually at the It's A Wonderful Life Festival in Seneca Falls, New York, the town thought to be the inspiration for the movie's setting of Bedford Falls.
