    Description

    Item #2278
This cut and polished ammonite is from about 146 to 66 million  years ago (Cretatious Period), and is from France.  I do not know a lot about this ammonite, or its exact location. I purchased it at a show in 1986. I am sure you could find some info on google etc.
Ammonites are a squid-like animal with tentacles to snatch prey.  They could be tiny in size or 3 feet in diameter depending on the age and species.  As the animal grew in size, it would add chambers to accommodate its larger size.  This is a fossilized ammonite.
This ammonite has been fossilized and replaced with the mineral pyrite.  When you look at it, you will see many hollow chambers.  However, these are NOT hollow.  They are actually filled with a light yellow calcite that is very transparent.  It allows you to look into the chambers of the ammonite.  The back has been coated with something to make it shiny, but it's the real deal!  Very nice and unusual.
The size is 1 1/2 inches wide, 1 1/4 inches tall, and 3/16 inch thick. The ammonite weighs 3.5 ounces or 10 grams.
