    Description

This scarce chromolithograph, circa 1900, was printed on a lightly textured paper to simulate canvas or linen.  It will include the frame you see, shipped without glass.  The title of the painting is "The First Lesson", showing a lovely portrayal of an older woman of African descent with a young girl being taught how to utilize strawberries on a gelatin dessert, presumably made of Knox Gelatin.
(A box of which is shown in the lower right facing corner.)
The artist is Harry Herman Roseland, known for his paintings of African American men and women, often older folk.  The original of this piece,
    The First Lesson,
was in the collection of the Knox family, hence the link with the Knox gelatin box in imagery.  Lithographs of this image in a size of 20" x 27" could be purchased from the Knox Co. by sending in an empty gelatin box and 15 cents.  This example measures 22" x 27, curiously close to that size.  This front of this colored image is in very good condition with light flaws.  The old mat is a bit brittle and has a vertical crack on the bottom.  See the back view of the print and you will note it had been in an old frame for decades and did suffer some dampness...BUT...that does not interfere at all in the color of the front, which is viewed without any knowledge of the aging on the back.  I include some images of the small flaws on the front in the last 5 images, and the stained backside in the very last photo.  It has a backing cardboard and the wood frame which helps to ship safely.  Check out my OTHER ITEMS/SELLER STORE.
Ebay does not allow the direct placement of quotes from other sources if they have hidden links, therefore I refer you to the copious material about Roseland to be found on Wikepedia.
